Oxfordshire Arts have, for at least the last year, had tutored all-day open studio classes on Fridays during term times. These are similar to our term-time classes, but are run roughly once a month and are bookable individually. Up to now they have been rather buried in our term-time schedule. In both July 2023 and 2024 we ran several weeks of Open Studio classes that were very popular, introducing many new faces to Muster Point. So we decided to gather all these classes into their own page, with the aim of providing “easier to book” pottery classes to those who might still be on the term-time waiting list!

Our current term-time potters as well as complete beginners (and any in-between) are welcome to come along to these Open Studio classes. Each student will be taught individually, dependent on what they want to achieve and their experience and aptitude. Classes will be restricted to a maximum of ten students.

In 2025 we are doubling the number of Open Studio classes offered by introducing a once-a-month class tutored by Steve Broughton of Pottery Throw-Down fame! Steve will bring to his classes a wealth of knowledge and experience, particularly in throwing. The other monthly Open Studio class will be tutored by either Alison Jones or Debbie Page.

Open Studio Summer School

Our 2025 Summer School is two weeks of pottery excess to help get addicted potters through the Summer break to September when it all gets back to pottery normality! Week one has Debbie Page on days, and Alison Jones on evenings. The format is the same as our Friday all-day Open Studio classes.
Week two has Alison again on evenings, but the all-day classes are given over to Steve Broughton who has come up with a series of Masterclasses that can be attended individually or as a series. Day One (July 16th) is devoted to mugs. Day Two (July 17th) focuses on vases and large throwing. Day Three (July 18th) gets into teapots.
Each class would start with a design discussion where Steve would bring in some examples and encourage students to bring in their favourite pieces (virtually or in reality). This would be followed by a chat about likes and dislikes and what elements might be incorporated into their own work. After that, Steve would do a demo, and then most of the day would be hands-on making, with the initial discussion helping to guide their approach. Steve would touch on functional theory and gradually move into more decorative and expressive work.
